When Scottish naturalist David Douglas made the first of his three trips to the Pacific Northwest in 1825, he thought he was collecting attractive seeds for British gardens back home. But as the scope of his explorations grew, it seemed as if every living thing he touched took on a life of its own. This slide presentation will trace some of the intricate relationships among plants, people, and place that Douglas’s journeys revealed, and ask how they might still resonate with the way we live today.
