At the turn of the 19th century, contact with European and American fur traders brought a tidal wave of new people to the lower Columbia River. This slide presentation will trace some of the changes in family life, medical treatment, and education that occurred over the next five decades, and explore the origins of the diverse society that continues to this day. Special attention will be paid to the Willamette Valley as seen through the eyes of Scottish naturalist David Douglas and several Hudson’s Bay Company physicians who also served as fur agents.
